I went back to the bottle dump on the river bank today, this time with detector in hand. I have a couple of things to celebrate here, first, my first ever Indian Head Penny, second, my oldest coin found to date. Herein lies the problem, I know they only produced I.H.'s from 1859 to 1909, but I swear it looks like this one says 1804. Even though I know that's impossible as that would make it a "Large Cent", it's hard for me to see 1904 on this coin.

Let me know what you think.....

Thanks in advance for the info....

Nice IHP find. Must be a disfigured 1904 but I can see how it could look like a disfigured 8.

If it said 1804, it would be a Draped Bust LC. Your IH can only say 1904, sorry.

That's exactly what I thought, that it would have been a Draped Bust (I wish),. I KNOW it's not a 1804, but thought it was hard to tell the difference and figured someone knew of some kind of error or something of the sort.

It looks like post mint damage to me.

Great find, corrosion can play havoc on the eyes. I love Indian head pennies
