I found this in a civil war camp but not sure if its from the war or from another historic period. Frankly, there may not be enough of it left to tell what it is or was. But I'm hoping maybe another relic hunter has found something similar and I can get a positive i.d. on this piece.
It is made of brass or copper and there is clearly a cross on the piece, kind of reminds me of a Red Cross type of symbol. I can make out at least two of the letters above the cross - "G" and "N". Any thoughts? Thanks! mysteryitem.webp

Maybe clean it up a bit, hopefully more detail will come out on the letters.

I think it could be from a Masonic piece "In Hoc Signo Vinces". This is not the same but just the idea -

I think this is EXACTLY what it is.....I say this because I found this piece in that Union camp in Vicksburg not far from where I found the Masonic sword sheath frog.
What was this piece used for??
