This object came from a house site dating from about 1730-1770 on the SC coast. Material is brass. Dimensions are 1 5/8" tall, 1 1/8" at the base, and 5/8" wide at the opening. Weighs 19.1 grams. There are not any markings or decorations on the item, other than the three bands around the middle. In general, it is a very nicely made object. Any clues? Thanks!

I take it the base is closed. Is it like a small brass bottle ? If so I'm thinking maybe a small whale oil lantern of some kind :dontknow:

Yes, base is closed and has a rolled edge. It is like a small brass bottle. Obviously there used to be some sort of cap on it, but that wasn't located.

This is a bit of a guess, but I think that is part of an old inkwell. Something like these.
