I think you are right, the wear pattern doesn’t look like it ran against a gear.I don't think IT'S a gear. Looks like a sprocket for square link chain.
It’s probably just the camera angle.in the second picture, it appears the gaps are not uniform in size.
Many years ago, riding lawn mowers used a simple forward, neutral, reverse transmission, that was chain driven. That looks like the drive sprocket from the transmission .What is it? It has right hand fine threads inside and 10 teeth. About a 1/2” hole in the gear end. It’s not pipe threads inside.
