Brass Item possible Civil War

This item was found at a site used during the Civil War - not saying it IS from that period. Item is made of brass, approximately 9 inches long. Appears sand cast. Thanks.

I like that idea, but I think it's too short for a top joint. Maybe a Toe board brace?
