I found an interesting Tag with Chains in a confirmed confederate camp. My research based on my finds and maps indicates this unit was likely Hood's far East Flank Unit during 2 month retreat from Atlanta. Unit was camped around a home. I have found 2 AVC buttons, Lined I, silver coins, Sword scabbard pieces, frame buckles large and small, numerous horse affiliated brass, File with tip sharpened for puncture And numerous coin buttons. Today I found a brass Tag with Number 14 on both sides with chain attached. I will post pic next. Anyone have any ideas? Doubtful its a slave tag but......

I have this tag I found from a virgin Confederate Cavalry camp I've been hunting this past year. Mine doesn't have the loop, it's a rectangular hole in it, but it has numbers stamped onto it like yours and makes me think of some sort of baggage tag. I'm still not certain on mine and yours I really don't know either, the chain is really strange. Maybe it was on a chest or something or maybe they had it attached to the horse bit for identification of some sort?

Welcome to Tnet cliffy, definitely not a slave tag. The script looks period but my gut is that it's a baggage tag. Post your other goodies if you still have them.

I wish I could Post my other goodies. I was an avid and very serious Relic Hunter from 1990- 1998 and found too many "Nice" finds to remember. Even spent 2 weeks in the Ga archives researching camps from various sources and finding period maps to crosslay over modern ones. I joined the Army or rather re-joined it in 1998 through 2006 and sold My Tesoro Bandido and all my relics. Got close to 10K from all the finds. I just started back hunting again 1 month ago and decided to go to one of my least hunted old sites with my new Teknetics G2. Man that thing purrs like a kitten. Most of my Favorite sites are on the Coast of Ga. My best site is nor a shopping Mall at the Darien Exit off I-95:(

A few of my other finds above same site.

Villagenut and I both had the same thought ~~ I bet your favorite spot will become someone else's too now. There are a lot of great people here, but you have to beware giving too much info away. Trolls will scavenge your spots without ever blinking an eye or losing a moment's sleep. Welcome to the site. I am sure you will become a valuable contributor with your prior experience.

Was there a farm there? We find brass cow tags with numbers like yours but our tags are oval like a belt plate. Dairy farmers hung tags around cow's necks for i.d. purposes. HH, Quindy.

It def looks like an animal tag

Cows used to wear metal tags before WWII to identify them. Now they're plastic.

Good Luck Hunting through 8 inches of Pavement Old Dude. If you find something let me know haha.

HAHA I am as Old hat to the not so honor among relic hunters as anyone. That site is buried under a huge shopping Mall now. So if anyone can dig through 8 inches of Pavement then I am happy to give them the 10 digit Grid coordinates. LOL

Quit tipping the new guys off! I am never going to find a new spot if you do this!

Nice find Cliff. That chain makes me think animal tag.

Welcome and good luck!

I once had a very good relic hunting buddy that I hunted with on a regular basis. Our rule was that we would not hunt the other's site without being there together. I found a nice Palmetto Guard Button one day at a new site I had just discovered. I stopped by his house on the way home to show it to him and because of the trust i had with him I told him where my site was. He asked if we could go the next day but I told him I had to work, which I did. Well I managed to get off of work around noon so I headed to my site. As I pull in who do I find but my buddy there hunting. I walked up and said hey and asked him he had found anything yet. He had and it was a nice Republican Blues button. I looked at him and said well enjoy your hunt today because it is the last time you will ever hunt together with me. Later that day he came to the house and tried to give me the RB button as a gesture of apology but I turned it down and that was the last time we spoke.
