This appears to be a brass tag which was found near an old bridge site on a small creek in NJ that was active from the 1750's until the early to mid 1900's. It weighs .324 oz or 9.20 grams and measures 38.4 mm in width.

One side is blank, but the words "DARM LATT" were seemingly hand etched onto the other side of the tag. My initial research into the words has me guessing that this may have labeled something from a butcher... possibly some kind of gut sausage.

Maybe this fell off of a truck or wagon a hundred years ago or more?? I'm curious if anyone has any thoughts.
Thanks!

Interesting. I came up with much the same, translating from German to English. The word "Darm" seems to mean "intestinal", but for Latt I came up empty.

Ha Ha.

If it were Norwegian, it would translate as "gut laugh" but they don't have a direct translation for our idiom of "belly laugh".

I can't see it being a name either... not even a company name.

Since it's crudely engraved by hand, I would think it may only have significance to whoever engraved it.

Thanks Red-Coat. I wondered if it was an oxen tag or something similar, but I agree with you that it doesn't seem like a name.

Is that a symbol above the "A", and if so, what is it?

Maybe similar to a coal miners tag . Go in the mine you put it on a peg board to show your in the mine.

My first thought was a dog tag or some other animal's ID tag.
But what about a Bale tag? Maybe 'Darm & Latt' was a feed store?..

My first thought was the same. A bale tag would certainly be something to consider. Thanks for the insight! I also wonder if "Darm" and "Latt" could be abbreviations.

Here is an annotated close-up. Looks like there is a circle above the "A". There might also be something inside the circle - but not sure. In the end, it may not help ID. I also looked for a Darm Latt on FamilySearch and didn't find anyone with that name, although there were some people with Latt as a surname.
