brass thingy

I was hunting an old Civil War camp today and didn't find much except for this cool old brass piece. I have NO idea what it is or what it was used for--hope somebody out there can help! Thanks.

Looks like we've dead-ended on this one............do you think it would be worthwhile to put it on the Civil War section of Treasurenet......but I'm not even sure it's Civil War!
