Brevard sheriff's employees 'pay' for picking up spilled coins
For four current and former Brevard County Sheriff's Office employees, the cost of $70.75 in nickels is as follows:
One resignation, more than $1,400 in pay, a shot at law-enforcement academy and ridicule on a national scale.
A Brevard deputy sheriff received two weeks' unpaid suspension, and a communications officer received a written warning for picking up the newly minted nickels from the side of Interstate 95 three days after a fatal pile-up involving a U.S. Mint tractor-trailer, officials said Thursday.
"Your actions have resulted in the loss of the public's trust and brought ridicule upon yourself and the other members of the Sheriff's Office," wrote Sheriff Jack Parker in a memo to Deputy William Fletcher, who received the suspension. "Your fellow employees do not deserve to be embarrassed in this manner, but they must suffer through it because the actions of one member affects us all."
