Detector(s) used
F75 LTD, 1280X Aquanaut, & a Patriot (back-up/loaner)
Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
Went back to the brick house today hoping to pull some IHPs or at least something from the 1800's.
I am running BOOST process and changed direction from (East to West) to (North to South).
As soon as I got there, it started to drizzle. :unhappysmiley:
No fear, I won't melt. Within a few minutes it cut loose. :BangHead:
I went to the van and got my poncho, a little rain was not going to chase me away.
First target was the bullet. On my 3rd row I get a big hit next to the sidewalk.
I dug down 8 inches, nothing in the plug.
I pulled the pro pointer out and when I put it in the hole it was going off. Must be a little deeper.
To make a long story short I pulled my 1st Big silver, and it's from the 1800's! :hello2: An 1812 Napoleon Empereur 5 Francs coin. I am stiil stoked even though I dug it about 4 hours ago.
The wife normally does not get excited regarding my hobby nor the finds, but she had to take a pic of that coin to send to her pops. Pulled 3 more wheats (1935, 1944, & a 1951-D. Only 2 memorial pennies.

I did go next door to an older permission and I pulled an old stirrup (now I have the set) dug the other one last year.

Isn't this a wonderful hobby? Thanks for reading, and hope ya'll got out to swing the coil today.

Unbelievable, Loco! Imagine if that coin could talk. Trappers, explorers, traders, Natives, French soldiers, Pioneers may have all handled that one deep in the heart of the Louisiana Purchase! Congrats, Sub 8-)

Sub, I was thinking, that this town was not inhabited until 1818. After looking at an Indian trail maps it appears that state route 18 runs the same course as the old trail. It's the highway directly in front of the property. There weren't any houses here at that time, but there was a population of Indians in the area. I know of 3 local archaeological sites that I saw on a map from the early 1900's. Was this lost by an early trader or was it used as currency at a later date. My bother-in-law who is a coin collector mentioned that a lot of foreign coins were used back in the 1st half of the 19th century. I guess I'll never know, but as you can tell I have put some thought into it.

Great looking coin Loco.

Nice First Big Silver. If you dig anymore that house may start to sink. :laughing7:

BP I am going to give that property a rest and let the sod heal and get back to it in a couple of weeks. It's been a great permission, that I thought may have been hunted in the past 40 years. To my surprise it seems to be a virgin site.

I voted banner. That's one sweet find, LD! Buckwheat approves!

You've got more sequels than Rocky! Only difference is yours are interesting. Nice finds again.

OD, I plan on retiring the thread title. It seemed appropriate to go in sequel mode since I was posting often about this site. Going to give the plugs a chance to heal for a couple weeks. Thanks for taking the time an posting on my threads.

Nice going there Sarge.... thats awesome!:notworthy:

Wow, that is such a cool find, there should be lettering on the edge of that sweet silver. That is worth a few bucks too, I love it and I'm sure when Carolina Tom sees it he will be jelly like me. I found a stirrup like yours too. Wish I could say the same as that giant silver old coin!

Congrats Loco!

Treble H I am still in the farm leagues when it comes to my finds. You however are in the major league. Maybe someday I will make it there. If I don't, it won't be for not honing my craft and putting in the hours. I think I am like many others. I discriminated too much and swung too fast for the first year. I was more of a clad magnet looking for a big $$$ total for the season. I have slowed down, discriminate less and hope to hunt private permissions mainly going forward. Have yet to get the aquanaut out. I do plan on doing some water hunting this summer. I do all types of detecting, from parks, public lands, fields and celar holes. I do find cool relics, but my passion is as a coin shooter. I was lucky to pull 20 silver last year and have no doubt I can double that quantity this year.

Thanks to all of you for posting and giving me the sense of belonging. Wish we could all meet at a local dive and talk detecting. I am sure we would have plenty laughs especially after we down a few of our favorite spirits.

Thanks again, your humble friend. :notworthy:

If you discriminated more you would not have found the missing stirrup . Just depends some iron is worth the dig. That silver coin is a signal that is hard to miss. Nice deep recovery. The site has been good to you. Congratulationson BIG silver!!!

TN Mount. I think I missed it because it was so close to the sidewalk that I may have thought I was getting a false signal. I have always discriminated less on private property, But have been slow to knock on many doors. Using the F4 last season helped me in identifying false signals. If a site is worth hunting I always grid it out and hunt in at least 2 different directions. I have been know to go at a 45 degree angle on the 3rd pass if I pull plenty of targets in the 2nd pass. Most of my previous hunts have been on public lands in a 4 county area. You just can't beat a good permission site though.

Loco-Digger, what is the size of that nice coin.Is it larger than a half dollar ? Foreign silver is very scarce in the U.S.I think.

That's a monster of a silver! Well done sir

It's about 1/16 inch smaller in diameter than the Ike silver dollar.

I better start knocking on some doors in the older parts of town :laughing7: Super finds :notworthy:

I was just kidding. Heck I was looking forward to Part V. I voted Banner. Now go back and find another.

I looked online. That's a cool old coin.

Helvetia is Switzerland! Their currency is also called the Franc.
