British LCM MK1

Am looking on information on the British LCM MK1. Located one in about 7-8 Meters of water earlier this week a bit west of EL Alamein. Have been trying to identify which LCM it is. Have "Googled" it to death and have come up with 30 "possibles" from the 500 MK1's that were produced and are listed as sunk or missing (Listed as either lost in the Mid-East, Med, or Overseas). Don't know where to look for any additional identifying numbers other than the keel (which I can't get too). Serial numbers on the diesels have long since corroded to the point of not being readable. Any ideas?

Am thinking that if I can locate a list of ships British ships that were operating off the coast during WW2, that I can narrow the number of possiblities down by finding out what ship's would be carrying which LCM's.

The LCM is complete, even the screws (props) are still there. And the bridge console gauges are still intact. Engine compartment is pretty much filled with sand, as is the rest of the interior below decks. Alas, no treasure to be found, in the financial sense. But in the historical sense it's a good find and I may be able to contribute to the historical records of the LCM losses if I can identify it.

Will post some pics when I get them back from the developer (still using 35mm here, haven't upgraded to a digital underwater cam yet).

Yes, ID is positive that it is a MK1 LCM. Will post some pics when I return to Alexandria in a few days, alon with pictures of other MK1's for comparison from a modeling company. Am in sharm IL Sheikh taking a gas blending course right now. Location is approximately 20-25 kilometers west of of EL Alamein. Research leads to the belief that it is British due to the presence of a helmet which is corroded to the main deck. However, I do not know if the Aussies used the same style of helmets. Will have to do more research on that. Thanks for the tip on checking the Royal Aussie Navy. Did they use MK1's? Will continue to investigate.

Here are some pics of the wreck, plus one from a modeling company that I found online since I couldn't find any actual pics of a LCM MK1. The model shows modifications done to the pilothouse for the approach to the beach at Normandy. The other pic that I have shows the LCM without the modifications and matches the pics that I took, but it too large to post here

If anyone can point me in the right direction to find out which ships that could have carred LCM MK1's off the coast of Egypt during WW2 it would be greatly appreciated.

In October 1942 the Royal Navy maintained a force of five cruisers and 16 destroyers, as well as smaller craft, in the Western Mediterranean. Their task was to secure Montgomery?s northern flank, preventing interference by the much more powerful Italian fleet. The Italian Navy was both intimidated by the Royal Navy?s aggressive reputation and constrained by the lack of fuel resulting from the Allies? global maritime blockade.

On the night of Montgomery?s offensive a force of destroyers and landing craft carried out Operation ?Slender?, a simulated landing, 65 miles west of El Alamein. Both General Montgomery and General Alexander credited this with delaying the arrival of the German 90th Light Division at the main battlefront.

Thanks Gord for the list. Just added a few more "possibles" to my list (see below). And thanks to you Cablava for the info. The area that Operation "Slender" was conducted in is a few miles west of where this wreck lies and may have been involved in the operation. However, I haven't found that any of the recorded losses coincide with October of 1942. With that being said, the articles that I have found do not state a specific date when Operation Slender was actually carried out.

No need to make a list to eliminate the LCM's. Have already done that. Anything with a (*) shown below is what I added back onto my list based on Gord's information. All of these LCM's are listed as either lost in the Med, Mid-East, or overseas (unless overseas was anotated with with part of the world they were lost in).

Odd thing though, it is chrome plated (if I remember the last dive correctly). Did the RN use the same style of helmet?

In July 1940 principal shipbuilders were called to a meeting to discuss the requirement and their advice was sought as to the way ahead. Further meetings were held and resulted in two companies, John Brown and Fairfields, working out the detailed designs.

It was a supreme measure of collaboration and effort when another of the principal shipbuilders, Hawthorn Leslie, delivered the very first Tank Landing Craft in history in November 1940. This was only made possible due to the enthusiasm and co-operation of all concerned at their Hebburn yard on Tyneside enabling the delivery of an entirely new type of craft. This was designated as an L.C.T. MK I.

The craft encompassed some novel features - some of which we now take for granted such as a ramp which was hinged just above the waterline (the forerunner of the Roll-On Roll-Off ferries) and a double floating dock type of hull. Furthermore, the vehicles were protected from the weather and concealed from view by the side tanks from which a canvas cover was suspended over the hold.

Missed my window of opportunity to dive on the wreck last week due to work schedules and now have to wait on the weather to accomodate. So in the meantime I've been doing more research on the LCM MK1 and re-evaluating my dive plans I finally asked myself the question: "What do I do with the information about the wreck? Who do I send it too in order to have it entered into a historical database? (if indeed it is a missing LCM)". I have contacted a couple of WW2 museums in England and they came back with something along the line of me paying them to have research done on the wreck, not mentioning any avenue to have the wreck officially recorded.

If this is a missing LCM (and this goes for any previously undiscovered wreck as well), how does one get it properly recorded as a new wreck? Who do you contact? Concerning this wreck, a reality check on my part: 1.This wreck is most likely not of any significant historical value (but there may have been loss of life during its operations here which may give it historical value to survivors of those lost) 2. There is no monetary gain from listing the wreck in historical record. (History for history's sake.) 3. Why am I taking the time and effort to do it?......Because I can and I want too (Currently taking the MHAS video course and it has made me more aware of what I should be looking for.....call my project here a "training evolution" if you will). 4. Not looking for "glory" or reward here because it is just plain fun!

Obiviously I'm new to all of this, and so would ask: How would one submit into world record an undicovered wreck? I don't know and am asking for your advice, experience, and guidance that any of you may want to provide.

I would have to believe that the Royal Navy would be interested, at the very least. I have corresponded with British regimental historians, and they were prompt with responses to my queries; since it was land forces being transported, there could be interest from them as well when tentative identity is established.

Thanks for the response. And yes, I think the Royal Navy would be interested. Just don't know how to contact the right department within the RN. Identity of the LCM has been confirmed as an LCM MK1 but not which one as of yet (Waiting on weather here). I do not know how to contact the British Regional historians from here. Will do the search online for an e-mail address but if you have one handy and can send it to me it would be greatly appreciated.

Any entries in either of the lists that say 'Middle East' can probably be eliminated, they were usually pretty specific when it came to reporting locations. The Med battle/strategic documentation in the rest of that new site may be helpful in narrowing down an ID; may be able to get volunteer assistance through them.

No real change on my pet project "LCM-X", as I have named it. Weather and work schedules just aren't cooperating so far. In the meantime, I have been doing loads and loads of research and think that I am making some progress. I have narrowed down the probable WW2 Operations that it would most likely have participated in. One, being Operation Slender mentioned above by Cablava. The second operation would be Wavell's Operation Compass which ran from Sept 1940 until Feb 1941 in the defense of Sollum and Marsa Matruh located about 40-45 west of where the wreck is located. Since the MK-1 was not a particularly well armored craft and was basically a barge with a deckhouse, ramp, and folding sides, it makes sense to me that it may have been used to deliver Supplies, light vehicles, and troops well behind the battle lines and the distance seems about right. By the time the Battle of El Alamein took place the Allied Forces had withdrawn to El Alamein so I don't think that an LCM would have been forward of that battle line unless it was after the Germans had been defeated. Haven't been able to locate much information on the Allied activities on the north coast of Egypt after El Alamein. Another clue that I have is that I drove out to the cove where the wrecksite is located (about 3 hours by car) and found that the name for the area that I was originally told is, in fact, not the original name of the area. Not "Mina Caesar" (Caesar's Harbor), but it actually Side Haneish. There was an airbase located there during WW2, which, I think may lend some credence to the MK-1 being used to deliver supplies. The other supporting theory as to the MK-1 being used for Supplies, light vehicle, or troop delivery, is the craft's maximum load carrying capability of 16-tons which would not allow it to carry the armoured vehicles that were used at the time. (The "Matilda II" tank, for example, which was in common use at the time, weighed 23.6 tons.)

So, until weather and work schedules cooperate, continuing research here. And when I think I have all of the information that I need, will research it again. Will update the post as I make progress.

Hi All,
Just an update on the progress of my "LCM-X" project. This post is more about the MAHS course than the LCM that I am researching. As many of you know, I have enrolled in the MAHS video course (really dry stuff...but lots of useful information for newbies to underwater surveying and archaeology). As part of the course completion requirements, one has to attend a MAHS Field School. Have been in contact with MAHS and Mr. Steven Anthony, and proposed that I do a survey of the wrecksite via remote proctorship in lieu of attending the MAHS Field School, with certain stipulations from the MAHS organization. All of which are do-able. My proposal is going to be put to the MAHS Board or Directors for approval, or not. Hopefully it will gain approval.

For the edification of other TN members here who are enrolled in the MAHS course, I found out that the Field School certifies all participating members to the level of PADI Master Diver (which I already have). And also, there is a statement in the parchment brochure that is included with the video shipment stating that the course participant has 30 days to complete the course after enrollment. Mr. Anthony informed me that this is inaccurate and had thought that the statement in the brochure had been purged. All participants of the course have 120 days to complete the course. Remote field study, if approved by the Board, requires additional purchase of the MAHS Field Study video. Mr. Anthony also indicated in his e-mail to me that extensions to the 120 day completion requirement are granted liberally.

Hope this information helps some of you out there.
