British officer's engraved trunk plate.

Just wanted to share my most recent find. Seems to be a British officers personalized copper trunk plate.

The engraving reads Lieutenant Won...(?)
Royal Engineers.

I would guess from the war of 1812 period
Would really like to find the name of the lieutenant it belonged to.




Also a few buckles and musket balls. I will only post this one as I have never found one of this particular type. Not sure of it's use but it looks similar to the ones found on the musket.

The trunk plate is a neat relic, too bad you don't have the whole thing, but the other half may be out there. Nice sling buckle too.

From a quick search, it seems the Engineers were called the Royal Sappers and Miners in 1812, and returned to the Royal Engineers in 1856. The script vaguely reminds me of Spencerian script. I wonder if there is a roster for a company stationed in Canada? Awesome find.

Thank you. I don't know of any military related activity in the late 19th century in the area where I found it. They acquired the prefix Royal in 1787 and participated in improvements of the defences in and around Montreal in the years prior to the war of 1812 That's where my assumption of it's age came from. The relics I have found in this particular area seem to indicate late 18th to early 19th as well.

Definitely a sling buckle. That trunk plate is a really nice piece. Man I hope you can find the other half. That would really put it over the top if you could find the history on the soldier
