I bought this plate 15 yrs ago from a known detectorist who worked the battlefield a long time ago and dug quite a few relics. Its a briwn bess plate, marked with an I (i) over a 19. British marking convetion would suggest thats the 9th company of a regiment, with a rack number of 19. This was dug from the American right wing of the battlefield. The british units that had a 9th company at the battle were the 23rd, 33rd and 71st regiments. They mostly fought on the American left flank, though the 71st did see action on the right.
I also have heard that the continentals in the maryland and delaware regiments by this stage were mostly supplied with Charleville muskets. If thats true that would suggest this is more likely to be british.
There is a chance that the US milita present were supplied with captured british brown bess (maybe from Saratoga where large amounts of equipment was captured).
Questions:
Thoughts on whether this is USA or british markings?
Were either the Maryland or Delaware regiments present still using brown bess?
Any thoughts on a regiment ID?
my best guess is given it was found on the right USA flank from.the Camden Battlefield, it's likely a 71st regiment british plate, as it looks like a battalion of 71st were engaged there, and they had a 9th company present at the Battle
