Had an awesome hunt yesterday!
I took my Manticore back to a colonial site that I’ve already pounded pretty hard with the Nox 900. Over past hunts there, I’ve pulled numerous buckles and buckle fragments, flat buttons, blowhole buttons, an 1813 Dutch coin, and several other relics.
This trip turned out pretty good. I ended up digging 6 more flat buttons, a thimble, 2 buckles, an 1822 large cent, and a bunch of other small bits. One of the buckles was identical to one I found there in the past, which was pretty neat.
I usually hunt right up until the last bit of daylight, and I always keep swinging on the way back. As I was heading out, I got a 55 on the Manticore. I popped the plug expecting a brass flat button, but I quickly realized it was a cut coin!
At first glance i saw a yellowish hue, so gold crossed my mind for a second, but it was getting dark and hard to tell. My heart was definitely pumping! After looking at it closer, I believe the yellowish color is just staining.
I know very little about Spanish coins, but I believe it may be a cut piece from an hammered 8 reales cob. It doesn’t have a reeded edge, and the back is smooth, so I’m thinking possibly 17th century to early 18th century?
Can anyone help identify the markings on it? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Needless to say, I wasn’t expecting to end the hunt with anything like this! A buck lister for sure! Thanks for looking!
