I'm in Kentucky. I found this buckle while digging weeds out of my garden today. I was going to toss it but I decided to clean it up with a toothbrush and water and take a closer look. It has a loop on the left side but none on the right. I can see an eagle grasping three arrows in the tallons with e pluribus is unum above the head. It's hard to make out anything more due to the gnarled condition. Could this possibly be Civil War? The pictures show the front and back, respectively. image.webpimage.webp.

Something doesn't look right with its construction to be period, but not sure? Hard to tell with its condition. A wild guess i'd say post war but could be wrong? nice find

It is thin and looking at pictures online of civil war buckles they appear thicker so I agree the construction doesn't seem quite right.

I believe it is a sword plate. Not sure of the age. Cool find

I believe what you have is a model 1874 sword belt plate worn by calvary by and officers during the Indian wars. Post civil war but still a nice save

I think you're right richeysd76. I found a picture online based on your info and it looks exactly like mine. Thanks!
