Looks like suspender adjustment clasp.
may have patent date/manufacturer mark underneath the crust.
here's a similar design, I found both parts to this clasp.
Yours looks to be in great shape and probably has some nice ornamentation.
Great Find!!

I dont know if this helps but I attached some pics of it cleaned up. There is some nice scrolling on the sides and the stars are a nice feature too.

I'm not sure what they went on but I've got one sorta like yours but it's small & the slide part is built different on the back.Mine has gold stars & was once silver plated it looks like as I can still see some.If I remember correctly I think I found it at a late 19th century site. :icon_scratch: And would consider it some sort of adjuster buckle.
Take Care,
Pete, :hello:

Why do people keep referring these to buckles :icon_scratch: they are adjusters, for belts or straps. Buckles are a device for fastening to loose ends...components consist of Frame, Chape, Prong and Bar, I see none of these on this :icon_scratch:

My example is a quick release adjuster for suspenders.
the piece on the left would be inserted rather sideways into the part on the right.
The straps would be wound between the bars to adjust proper length.

Yours is almost identical and Timekillers has the stars. Ill bet they are all the same manufacturer. What does yours say steelheadwill?

The two pieces I show were found close together, both stamped 'CH Guyot' (19th Century Clothier, not the manufacturer :( )
each piece using a different font size :icon_scratch:
Have dug several of these items, I recall posting a whatsit or maybe someone ID'ed them for me in 'Todays Finds'.
Though I used the term 'suspender adjustment clasp', this pair of items does fit the first definition of 'Buckle' that I found.
"buck·le (bkl)
n.
1. A clasp for fastening two ends, as of straps or a belt, in which a device attached to one of the ends is fitted or coupled to the other." :D

Ok, this is not a buckle. Exactly why this was posted in the "What Is It" forum.

I was refering to the one posted not yours...which by the way is a adjuster..not buckle.

The French patent is #63298 but after the patent expired, many cheaper look-a-like generics were made.

I want to thank everyone for the great info. It looks like I can positively call my find a strap adjuster. Unfortunately even though 3 people posted similar adjusters, mine does not match them. Mine has raised stars and decorative scrolling that differs and it lacks the points on the sides and it lacks the stamped makers marks. Either way, thanks again to all who posted.

Patents are only good for 10-15 years. So after the patent expired, the suspender piece could be copied by anyone.

Its definitely a Guyot suspender piece or a later generic version. The stars are very similar.

Do you have a date for that French Patent? Also, I'd like to see the Patent's diagram, if it is available. I'm asking because a friend dug a marked CH Guyot suspenders strap-adjuster and he firmly believes a Confederate soldier was wearing it.
