Detector(s) used
Ace 250 and Minelab Explorer II
Folks,
I was on my way to a funeral and I saw an old abandoned house. I decided to seek permission to detect it from the owner on the way home from the funeral. I was granted permission although the lady was skeptical at first thinking I knew of some treasure on the land. I assured her I was after coins and colonial relics and would not fall down the well so she smiled and said, "Good luck. I hope you find something." Well, the house dates to the mid-1850's and was last lived in 12 years ago by an old single man. The house still is filled with his stuff from the day he died (I'd love to search the house). The outside had a 3 foot diameter open well filled in all but the top three feet with large rocks. Weeds and grass were 3 feet tall in the yard. It was tough going with the Explorer but I did manage a number of finds, most of them being made of copper. I found three buckle-like objects (can anyone date these?), some what its (one is the size of a cigarette butt and appears to have some gold gilt on it), an old barrette made of copper that still works, a tie tack? with a fake diamond and a sign made of brass that says, 'Push.' The only coin was a '58 wheat. I know there has to be silver there. I need to take a weedwhacker next time. I barely even touched the yard with the short hunt today; there's lots to search yet.
I also surprised two whitetail fawns that were bedded down in the tall grass. Unfortunately, I think their mama was laying dead along the road nearby.
Now to the pictures...

There will be better stuff there! I would offer to mow for free! The copper or brass tube with the gilt on it, might have a little tiny religious figure in it.
I've found a couple like that over the years, but that one seems rather slim. The ones I've found, and others that I've seen, were about an inch and a half
in length and a 1/2" to 3/4" in width. Soak it in some oil for awhile, and see if you can coax the lid off. I wrecked my first one by being a bit to anxious to
see what was inside. :'(

Good luck on that site! Slab

The square piece that looks like a buckle is actually part of the frame for a clock gears' set. I've found a few in my detecting time, and they turn up in odd places for some reason. They can be very old though. . .Nice finds!

jrsherman beat me to it ! clock part. willy

Slab,
I have since figured out, due to you telling me to try to pull the inside of the piece out, that it is a lipstick tube. There is still a tiny amount of lipstick in it. Anyone know the age of it? I have found old lipstick tubes before but they have always been round, not oval like this one.

Lipstick tubes that are metal are probably no earlier than the 20s and no later than the 50s or 60s I'd imagine.

The top photo the bottom piece is a clock frame--and the photo below is a clock gear near the penny. Also in the photo with the penny is an organ reed from a pump organ or harmonium. It would've played the pitch "F" (as stamped on the back of it).

The top photo on the right, I have found these before in mid-1800s sites, and I would imagine that piece is a bit older, but I don't know what its function was.

Cheers,

Buckles
