"Buckles and Balls" & "A day of respect" Penobscot Expedition"

If u have been following my posts about the "Penobscot Expedition" over the last three years u know on the 4th of July , if possible , I make that 45 minute trip to not only save our American history and share it with u but also plant American flags above "Trask Rock " where 100 men where wounded in a 20 minute skirmish of which 35 died taking this hill . I do it as an old Vietnam vet who knows what it is like to come under fire and wonder if it will be your last day on earth. I hope during the loud bangs and fire in the sky ,at least on the 4th ,even being a divided country, we honor those that gave us Freedom & Liberty . So to me it is pan honor to place the flags were they fell and were buried and try to keep this history alive.
This year, on the 3rd and the 4th, I was able to do just that so to shorten my posts here r some pics with just a few notes. my first target was found in the middle of a trail where it had rained hard the day prior. I have found many shoe buckles and frames over the years. all were historic but probably the most historic was of Cpt John Hinkley's who was killed while urging his men on who standing on "Trask Rock". See pic with flag. Most shoe buckles were plain without decoration. The one I found in that road bed , with tines rotted away. looked like it did almost 240 years ago. Beautiful designs and an officer type. Next buckle an hour away off that trail was a true surprise and in all brass of and enlisted plain type. one if only three I have found in 24 years hunting this site. Continued on to find a few musket balls and some grapeshot. About 3 PM got to plant my flags again in hopes they would not be molested as they were last year. Mission complete. I did indeed hunt again on the 4th that and is another post to come. Enjoy and happy 4th. Stay well and safe. Gary

Nice!!! Congrats!!!

A complete buckle and grapeshot what a great day! Also a powerful tribute to those who fought and those who died fighting.

Thank you sir for honoring those men with flags......I for one still love America and appreciate what those men did.....and what you've done !! Congrats on some very fine buckles too !!

Thanks guys and much appreciated. I did upload a few minutes ago pics of Cpt Hinkley's silver planted buckle frame. Some years later I bought the tines which would have looked like the original when lost. They were made of steel and long ago rooted away. If u have not read the history of Cpt Hinkley's buckle feel free to go back in my previous posts. Yes many Heros died that day along with another estimated 360 plus during the 3 weeps siege. Many on the naval retreat up the river burning their ships up to Bangor , Maine . They died traveling thru the wilderness . Google "Trask Rock" for an video of that one morning skirmish. I did hunt on the 4th and later today do another post I hope my u will enjoy. G

Very nice looking buckles.

Thank you for planting those flags, from one Viet Vet to another!!!!! Great finds

Thanks to you as well sir. The flags are all Americans , men and women , who have worn the uniform proudly . God bless the USA.

Awesome buckles, congrats! :icon_thumleft:

Great story and thanks for planting the flags of honor… from another Viet Nam Vet! (1st Air Cav '66-'67)

Thanks for this!

Castineman1779,

Another great hunt, the buckles look outstanding. Question, did you also find a silver coin, I notice a silver looking object next to the top buckle. Thanks again for taking us along on another great hunt, I for one appreciate your historical inputs. Additionally, thank you for honoring the soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Good luck with your hunts. Walt

Thanks guys. Walt that is a dropped musket ball in that pic. over the now 24 years have found quite a few coins since a lot of this area had walking trails since the late 1800s. this year found my first Trime dated 1853. Last year a well worn 1762 2 reale above TRask Rock on the high ground. probably my best coin, besides the 1772 gold guinea a 1652 oak tree shilling on the mainland beach. here r a few . I think maybe this fall will be my last hunt for history. it has been an exciting 24 years but time to say goodbye for me. thanks for looking and your comments. Gary
