As I was cycling to the bus stop to go to work. I thought I would stop & talk to the archaeologist's who are doing a dig in the centre of town. Problem was couldn't get to them easily with all the barriers. So hopped up on a 7ft wall and called over to one of them. Whilst dangling there I asked if they wanted me to detect for them tomorrow on my final day off this week. They said they would take my number & the boss will call me. (unusually for Archies they had a detector, but no-one could use it very well!)

Just got to work & the phone rang saying its OK. I decided sod work & left at luchtime to help with the dig.

The only detectorist they know about are the ones that leave holes in thier trenches when they come back in the morning. So I'm doing our community a favour by showing at least some of us are honest.

Found several bits of lead & iron nails. Added 8 more Roman coins to thier collection (they had 3). IDed some stuff for them & came home for tea.

See picture of the best Roman Coin:

I like your style Crusader, very commendable! The German Archies are really down on detectors, I have volunteered several times to help with my detector and receive an answer of, I can help dig without a detector or I can detect and have an Archie student dig for me. Having an Archie dig for me is not so bad, LOL, however, I prefer to dig my own holes. The Archies are doing a dig near a Medieval castle in my permitted area, they are digging a Roman outpost. I volunteered but never got an answer. Their proud finds have been a hand full of pottery shards printed in the local newspaper a few days ago. I will check out the area next week as this week, work was kicking my butt hardcore. I have scouted the area where they are digging and have a very good idea where they are, should be easy to find them. Kirk in PA is correct, under the British Treasure Law, at least hundreds of Treasure hoards are found every year. A British hoard is two to three or more like coins found in the same spot or close together. I hope KirkPA does not blow out a sphincter muscle if he reads this post, his head might shrink! They´ll just log his finds as theirs, and he´ll be forgotten (Odds of 10 to 1)
Sad but true

They may log them as theirs, which is fine. However, I don't think they will forget, I could tell they had fun running around helping me & logging the stuff. People remember positive experiences, sadly not as much as negative ones. We all need to open our mines a little more and not be blinkered by prior negative experiences.

Kirtpa questions easy for me, do I find a pot of gold coins & keep it to myself. Not tell the farmer (Steal & liar), not report it to the authorities (break the Law). Sell it all bit by bit for my own gain (Greed). Or do the right thing, hand it in & give the farmer his share. Get the market value & more importantly - live with myself. Easy.

I am glad that you can help out the Archaeologists and at least get something for your trouble. I just wish we Americans had some kind of law like that. Here we would be lucky if we had our name mentioned when finding an item and not get a fine or jail time.

I watched a recent television show where a man found some dinosaur bones in Wyoming. He had started by digging some out for himself (which he should not have done), but once he saw what was all there he alerted the authorities. His reward was to serve a few months jail time, but he was out when they interviewed him for the show. The authorities said they could not have found the place without his help.

I myself am interested in history and I would not remove anything of historical significance from a site. But to turn in any item..hmmm.

These are a few of the Michigan State Park regulations in regards to Metal Detecting.

The following conditions apply to the use of metal detectors in state parks:

1. All recovered items must be checked by a park employee before being removed from the park.

3. Coins may be retained by the finder unless rare and historic. If coins are turned in, PRB staff should contact the Michigan Historical Center, Department of History, Arts and Libraries to determine historic value and disposition instructions.

4. Any artifacts found will be retained by the State.

It's too bad we have laws like this that encourage people not to report what they find.

Happy Hunting,

Scott (Mid-Mich)

Only 2 or more silver or gold coins with 10% precious metal count. Including any associated bronzes & artefacts. 2 or 3 silver coins are NOT a hoard they just count under the terms of the act.

Crusader,
Great story. Congrats on your finds. They had the right guy (you), that's for sure.
When I first read your title, I thought you were refering to "The Archies" musical group. :o ;D
