Hey Y'all,
I am going through my small collection of lead and sorting them by type and size. There will be some I will need help with. This is one. It came from the Hagerstown, Md. area many years ago. That area was either a Union or Confederate camp for the duration of the war. The two "cannon balls" have already been identified as mill balls so they are no longer in my collection box. I will post some more in the coming weeks.
Thanks, in advance, for any and all help.

According to "A Handbook Of Civil War Bullets & Cartridges" by James E. Thomas and Dean S. Thomas, your bullet is a civil war era .44-caliber Bartholow bullet. See bullet #48 in that book... which says its "cartridge" was simply a cylinder of pressed gunpowder, glued to the bullet, US Patent #36,066 issued to Mr. Roberts Bartholow, August 5, 1862.

Thanks. I will have to get that book. I have one called "Ready...Aim...Fire Small arms Ammunition in the Battle of Gettysburg" and it is by Dean S. Thomas. It is 21 years old.
