burial mound question

Everyone i recently received permission to hunt a field across the road from a burial mound. None of the field is plowed and there are no creeks or water close to it. Is it still worth looking there ? If so where do I start ? Thanks

That is cool that you have access to the area. I don't have a clue as to where you would start but I would certainally hunt every square inch of that area I can't wait to see what you come up with. best of luck

Good for you Ace! Is the mound an identified burial mound? Has it been excavated? We have a mound in my area that has been in the process of excavation since the 1930's. There were very few burials in the mound proper but hundreds have been identified (and many excavated) in adjacent areas surrounding the mound. One big difference is the availability of water. The local mound is beside a river. Hope you have good hunting.

It has not been "officially" ID-ed as a burial mound. Nobody has touched it yet.It may be Adena or Hopewell. I'm sure where specific Ohio tribes lived . It sits @ 100 yards from the road in a wooded section of cleared land ( mostly hay fields). I am only allowed to hunt the other side of the road. I was hoping there would some type of land mark or possible gathering place they may have used. Any ideas would be helpfull. I'll post any /all finds Thanks !

If nothing is plowed up and there are no creeks how are you going to hunt?

Wait until this winter when all the vegetation has died out and then try all of the bare spots in the field that you can find. You might even ask if you take a weedeater in with you and take it right down to the bare dirt. Even then though the chances of finding anything are very slim, but you just never know when you might get lucky.

Get a shovel do some test digs...

The shovel tests are going to be your best bet... grid it off and graph it out into squares - and record what you find and where - you might be able to spot a pattern.
