hi jason32,
i noticed that you hadnt been replyed to yet, so here goes , basicly a lot of research and a lot of luck.
seriously, one of the most common methods is surveying an area with the use of a magnetometer, this device is generaly encased in in a towfish, cylinder with fins towable by a boat, the magnetometer is prefered initially because it detects varations in the earths magnetic field and unlike the sub bottom profiler has less restrictions on depths of a target.
utilizing a laptop computer and available software, the data from a mag survey can be analized reveling possible scatter paterns of a possible buried ship. a magnetomter will on detect magnetic anomiles. which if lucky could be ferrous metals in the shape of cannons, anchors, cannon balls, ect
the down side is the amount of modern debris far out numbers the amount of shipwrecks
so thse of us looking must always believe those famous words "today is the day"
