Rich, I've read throughout history women have used 'hair daggers' as protection. Although the pics of the ones I've seen was not a barrette, this one could be some type of variation.

Looks like a three inch barrette to me. Maybe belonged to someone who worked in a tavern or hotel serving or cooking food. Or possibly belonged to someone who just couldn't cut it. Arty

Good old add Bramblefind :icon_thumright: Have to admit based the attachment method I'm leaning more towards barette rather than brooch pin.
