"Uniform Buttons of the United States 1776-1865"... by Warren K. Tice is another good book .

Those button books are worth their weight in gold......and priced accordingly:laughing7:

Another very good reference is "Dating Buttons" by Warren K. Tice. It gives dates for the different backmarks as well as pictures of most of them. Add to that "American Military Button Makers and Dealers; Their Backmarks and Dates" by William F. McGuinn and Bruce Bazelon. Albert's book is available as is McGuinn and Bazelon's.
Bear in mind that all of these books are for military buttons.
There is a reference called "The Big Book of Buttons" by Elizabeth Hughes that I understand is very good on all type buttons. but it is priced well out of my range. A used example is listed for $750.00! I have three copies of Albert's book but I can't part with any of them at this time. Two belonged to my brothers that have passed away and the third was given to me by one of them.
