Button Expert Needed

Hello Forum,

I found a button today in a farm field here in NY, and I believe it is a L.H. Scovill Extra Rich 1821 - 1827 Civilian button manufactured in Waterbury, CT. I've seen the same buttons on Ebay, and they are listing them as Civil War. Can anyone definitively say that this could be Civil War? Thanks for looking.

You'll probably get more expert information that I can give but my experience says that this type of button is from the mid-18th to mid-19th century, well before the Civil War. Your date range makes sense to me.

It looks like a nice old flat button but I don't know if it is Civil War era.

Deffo not Civil War, despite what fleabay sellers might say. The Leavenworth, Hayden & Scovill partnership existed from 1811 until 1827 when Leavenworth and Hayden retired. William H. Scovill then went into partnership with his brother J.M.L. Scovill and the company was renamed J.M.L. & W.H. Scovill. Later still, it became the Scovill Manufacturing Company in 1850.

The backmark is 'LH & Scovill', which is for Leavenworth, Hayden & Scovill. That partnership only existed from 1811 until 1827. That's the possible era when the button was made, and quality terms such as 'extra rich' were in use from about 1810 onwards. It could still have been worn long after 1827 of course, although it's almost certainly a civilian item.
