Hello all. I have these buttons. I believe they are silver (maybe) over brass. The backmark is three initials: H. W. U. Thanks for the help.

It might help if you gave us more information. A general location that they came from and how you acquired them would help. I see you are new here so welcome to the forums. Hopefully someone here will ID your buttons soon.

It is a civilian pattern. That type of button manufacture came into existence ca 1835, and most buttons found made that way date 1840's to 1890's or so.

I’d guess the flowers to be edelweiss. Non-military. Popular in Germany, so probably made there?

Folks, thanks for the responses so far.

I do not know the provenance of these buttons.

I was hoping that the clear backmark initials would turn up in google searches, but so far nothing.

Hopefully, someone in this community will know.

Here is some info on the backmark- I think an Austrian company. Some of the backmarks include "Wien" for Vienna.

Manufacturer: HUW
Signature HUW means Heinrich Ulbrichts Witwe. The company, as reported on its website, has been around for over 200 years. Producing for the Germans during World War II, the company used the following RZM codes: M1 / ​​148 (badges), M4 / 92 (belt buckles), M5 / 289 (accessories for uniforms), M9 / 235 (so-called exit and occasional plugs) , M11 / 18 (NSDAP medals). The abbreviation RZM meant R eichs Z eug M eisterei der NSDAP - in the German Reich it was the name of the quality control office for uniformed products intended for NSDAP and SA.

Thank you Bramblefind for the information. I now believe that the buttons are associated with the WW2 German Army mountain (alpine) corps. Their insignia was the edelweiss flower. The front of the button features three edelweiss blossoms which along with the manufacturer suggests its identity. So, perhaps they are coat or uniform buttons from that corps. H.U.W. made many german army buttons. I would love to get confirmation for my idea. Suggestions of a source would be welcome. Thanks.
