Button Id

[Smilodon]

This was found with two Hibernia a 1798 Large cent and 6 other buttons that are totally encrusted. Also found a huge colonial button that is 1-1/2". This site has has also produced rev war period buttons. Any ideas?

Because you have the advantage of turning it at different angles with the light contrasting can you make out what the design is, or parts of the design?

It appears that you may be able to gently clean it (black grunge) a little further, but be careful not to go to far and remove the patina (lovely green).
