Unknown button dug 20 miles northwest of Charleston, SC, (Ladson, SC) Revolutionary War Camp. Motto at top "Pro Aris et Focis"...."For God and Country". Hard to say what the original Cipher letters were due to deterioration. I’m guessing it’s an Officer’s button, appears silver plated. Dated bottom ribbon 1720 or 1790. A 64th Regiment foot also recovered at site.

I believe that motto was used by both the French and British militaries as well as other organization and certain families. I'm sorry I can't be more help. It's a very cool find.

You mean to say with your fancy schmancy button book you can't be more useful then that?

Well I'm too lazy to look tonight. But I'm not totally convinced it's military yet

Iowa Dale

This 64th was dug a few yards away....

Hi nchistory, I think what you have is a Royal Provincials button. It was used by the Loyalist Regiments during the Revolutionary War.

Yeah what he said! A really nice looking button. And a 64th Reg. button? That's some good stuff. Definitely got my attention.

Royal Provincials used a pewter button with a crown over a R P, that one is totally different

Some suggested today that the date may indeed be 1780. If so would fit site perfectly as it dates 1780-82.

both are really cool

Playing with the colors on the un cleaned button. Third digit appears to be a 0, making this 1700. If you look at the distance of the fourth digit or font to the rim, the third digit would have to end about the same place making a Zero. Thoughts. Maybe forming date of this unit. I have seen this motto used for a Canadian unit that fought with the Americans in the Rev War, 1st and 2nd Regt, maybe this unit was formed prior to war, and this Officer came with a Loyalist unit to SC???? Still looking

Very nice buttons. Looks like 1790 to me. Great finds...

VERY cool find! Congratulations. "Pro Aris et Focis" (Latin), is more closely translated as: "for altar and home" or "for our altars and our hearths."
