Unknown button dug 20 miles northwest of Charleston, SC, (Ladson, SC) Revolutionary War Camp. Motto at top "Pro Aris et Focis"...."For God and Country". Hard to say what the original Cipher letters were due to deterioration. I’m guessing it’s an Officer’s button, appears silver plated. Dated bottom ribbon 1720 or 1790. A 64th Regiment foot also recovered at site.

Almost looks like 1796 to me. That said knowing zilch about buttons.
 

The date very well could be 1796 like Sandchip says.

I was looking for something else in back copies of The National Button Society Bulletin and found this article on Irish buttons with a similar button noted as from an "unidentified militia unit" and I remembered this thread.
