Well, nobody has responded to your question yet, so I'll say something about your thingy. I doubt it's a button because of the rectangular holes in it. What it is doesn't ring any bells for me. Could be a part to something bigger, and if it's old it could be something we today are unfamiliar with. I'm going to say that this thing may remain a mystery. Hang onto it because someday you might find out it's the only whatzit ever made. LOL

Could be any one of these things. But I will say this, if you look closely at it, it looks as if two triangular notches have been 'cut' into the edge and I do know that they use to do this to sew buttons on....It is a mystery, everything that has come off of this land has been no older than 19th century though. It looks to be made of brass. Could be off of a saddle or horse rigging. I dont know. Did go back this past weekend and found a nice buckle stamped "1854." It is cool, will post when I get a chance.
