Button?

This was found in Delaware and it measures a little over 1/2 inch in diameter. It was found at a site active during the Revolution, The Civil War, early 1900's and today (I hope it's not the latter). There seems to be writing on it - I used a dry toothbrush to clean it. Does anyone have any better cleaning tips? Thanks for looking.
