Yesterday I had the opportunity to go back to a Baltimore City park where we have found old coins and relics.
My plan was to grid just one corner of a soccer field, so slow and steady I tracked back and forth listening for faint tones and it started to pay off.
In all, I recovered 5 buttons from the 1800s, two of which have a small amount of gilt remaining. One of these is my favorite of the hunt, a Maryland militia officers cuff button; this shows the Maryland State seal with the word "MARYLAND" below the seal, Back mark is "EXTRA QUALITY", though only a portion of QUALITY is visible. I believe it is Tice B0447 and ALBERT MD11, made around 1860 and possibly lost during the Civil War.
One of the flat buttons bears the back mark JOHN DEAN LONDON. I've not found anything about the maker or button but suspect it dates from the early 1800s.
One if the five buttons has thread through the loop.
One item that I dug but did not post by picture is a horse tack rivet.
The only other "period" item recovered is a .50 cal musketball.
The three more recent items are the no-date Buff, four-way cross (plated), and the United Railways & Electric Company Baltimore token that states "GOOD FOR ONE CITY FARE"; this is the first street car token I've dug that adds the word "CITY" before FARE.
Thanks for checking out the post and pics.
