Yesterday I had the opportunity to go back to a Baltimore City park where we have found old coins and relics.

My plan was to grid just one corner of a soccer field, so slow and steady I tracked back and forth listening for faint tones and it started to pay off.

In all, I recovered 5 buttons from the 1800s, two of which have a small amount of gilt remaining. One of these is my favorite of the hunt, a Maryland militia officers cuff button; this shows the Maryland State seal with the word "MARYLAND" below the seal, Back mark is "EXTRA QUALITY", though only a portion of QUALITY is visible. I believe it is Tice B0447 and ALBERT MD11, made around 1860 and possibly lost during the Civil War.

One of the flat buttons bears the back mark JOHN DEAN LONDON. I've not found anything about the maker or button but suspect it dates from the early 1800s.

One if the five buttons has thread through the loop.

One item that I dug but did not post by picture is a horse tack rivet.

The only other "period" item recovered is a .50 cal musketball.

The three more recent items are the no-date Buff, four-way cross (plated), and the United Railways & Electric Company Baltimore token that states "GOOD FOR ONE CITY FARE"; this is the first street car token I've dug that adds the word "CITY" before FARE.

Thanks for checking out the post and pics.

Thx digger460! Thought I was in a good spot when the second button turned up!
Here's a pic of TICE 0447 from Ridgeway's website

Nice going on the recoveries, the John Dean London is a different makers mark, looked at a few links of makers and it wasn't listed. Congrats

Nice buttons and other finds you made!

Patience grasshopper,,
It sure paid off. Low and Slow
Congratulations

Congrats on the Maryland button!

That Maryland button is super, congrats on it and the other nice finds

Thx pepperj. Appreciate your looking into that button.

Thx Scruggs! I think that is a personal record - 5 in one hunt.

Great finds again Mike. The Maryland button is my favorite!

Thx ATW! A guy I hunt with found a half real recently in that area, so I figured it was a good bet.

Thx Phishfarmer. My co-worker is from the Petersburg area.

Thx Steve! That button is yet another evidence that soldiers were at this field. Other related finds for me this year at this site are a William cleaner bullet and a piece of carved lead. Others have found a buckle and 3 ringer.

Thx Art! I am pleased that it is decent shape. I did just a light going over with a toothpick. Can still read "MARYLAND" after all these years.

Thx Ken. Mine too! We are hitting other places now in the city. Going as groups of two or three. I was solo yesterday, but this is one of the safer locations.

Congrats Mike it's been a while since I dug a flat button, I'm stuck in the 20th century. Felicidades Señor

Great finds. I really like that religious pendant. Very ornate. Can't remember seeing one like that before.

Thank you, LILO. Herring Run park near Chesterfield and Harford. Try it and I think you'll find one.
