Yes, it's a butt plate for a rifle. So many types of these it would take an expert to ID it to a specific type of rifle. Good find. Gary

Ha.. Thanks . Wasnt sure cause it kinda looked like a foot to something besides a rifle ,

It appears to be the brass butt plate from a Kentucky Rifle. Very cool find

Really.. A kentucky rifle ! Ewe! Now i just have to remember where i found it ! Dammit!

Not really enough information to tell what kind of rifle it is from. With the small size it would be from a later period long rifle or a lighter half stock like an Ohio style or something similar. I would say more likely a light half stock percussion rifle. Most of the later or "golden age" long rifles were more ornate, and had a long patchbox. There would be a notch on the butt plate where the long patchbox closed over it.

Very interesting save. Congrats!

In some of the prints made of the Revolutionary War battles you can see the patriots using their long rifles as clubs when overrun by the British. One particularly striking print was part of the DOD series depicting US service personnel in various historic actions. It was a scene from the battle of kings mountain and I've tried to find it but can't. What area of the country might this be?

Nice find and best wishes!--------Phil

I used the name Kentucky Rifle as a generic term. Maybe American Longrifle would suit it better. Yes, it’s most likely from a rifle from the 1840’s and up. Could have been on a half stock or fullstock gun, and yes, I see no indication of it having a notch for a full patchbox, but it could have had the later toilet seat patchbox on the rifle. A very nice find.

Nice find and save of the rifle but plate. Best of luck in getting it ID'd.

Butt plate for an !840's Pennsylvania long rifle. Used on this rifle during the U.S. fur trade era.
