Very nice. Picked it up where.....
Went to a clean out of 5 out buildings on a farm. I always hand out a card showing a few of the military items I collect. They told a neighbor & I'm going home with the sword as well as 3 WW2 photo albums & a truck full of other lesser goodies.

I'm located in Northwest Arkansas.

Looks like it could potentially be navy. Looks like shark skin or ray skin handle.

No indication oof Naval use.
Eagle, drum, crossed flags, U.S., Cannon & wheel, but nothing specific to navy.
Description online does say shark skin grip/handle.
I agree. The blade points to land use but the handle looks like some I’ve seen in the past that have that type of material for the handle wrap. Obviously it can just be severely dried out leather that has took on that look as well.

This is a description from an auction house describing another sword..talks of shark skin handle.

(STAFF OFFICER SWORD. Classic 1850 Staff & Field sword, pierced floral decorated hilt with large “US”. Steel scabbard with engraved brass mounts, pommel has engraved patriotic shield and stars, 33” blade has fine etched patriotic panels and etched on ricasso “H G HAMLIN”. Hannibal G. Hamlin (1837-1937) sold swords from his Cincinnati store during the Civil War, 1862-1865. CONDITION: very good overall, blade retains most of its original luster, brass cleaned and toned to light mustard patina with traces of gold wash in protected areas. Shark skin grip complete with triple twisted wire. Scabbard body has traces of original brown finish, balance mottled iron patina with scattered areas of pitting.)

Better outdoor photos

very nice, I like it.
The skin looks to be in decent condition and the hilt looks very nice.
Very nice.

You did Good! Great Save of the sword. Well Done and Congrat's.

Thanks, the hilt, hand guard is caked with old attic dust. I'm worried about corrosion build up.
Would a light brush with soap & water hurt? Just a light brush.
