Looks like a Union eagle "I" button. The ‘I’ stood for Infantry. Other eagle buttons have an ‘A’ in the centre for artillery or ‘D’ for dragoon or ‘C’ for cavalry.

I honestly feel it will clean up nicely Art with a tooth pic. With the button completely dry, gently pic at the back and the crud will flake off, revealing the backmark. Great button my friend. I'll bet there is more at the site.

Congrats on your CW eagle "I" button. The best thing I found to clean buttons is aluminum jelly. Use a toothpick to clean it. It will remove the gunk and leave the patina. I included a before and after picture on how well it works.

I would be willing to bet that you definitely have a CW infantry button. The backmark on this button is very distinctive (inner ring of rays) and I would not be surprised if as you cleaned it you saw

HORSTMANN & ALLIEN / (dot) NY (dot)

This is a depressed mark between two solid rings and an inner ring of rays. Made by Steele & Johnson produced ca 1860.

Congratulations on the find

Jason
