Dug these in Southport N.C. Was wondering if they are civil war or newer. The small one says scovill and the big one says L.H. & Scovill and they both have an A on the shield. Thanks RK
Without being able to see all of the detail, I am guessing that they are Civil War era Union artillery buttons-most likely originally gold plated (gilded)
Go to the Relic section, under 'Eagle button backmark info' post, there is a Scoville Co. dated to 1850-1865. Dunno if it helps, only thing I can find right at the moment. Those 'button-eers' really know their stuff, try posting this over there on the Relic/buttons section, maybe? They are definately not 'newer' buttons, great find(s) there!

I found an identical button at the old U.S. Arsenal in Augusta Georgia. I have since sold it but I thought it dated somewhere just after 1800. Good find. You didn't buy that off EBAY back about 1999 did you. Looks like mine!
