I have seen similar iron "numbers" in telephone poles. Some way to mark or number them ?? VPR

Thanks for the responses guys. I figured it was too small to be collar brass. For now, it's in the "junk" box.

Could be a storm window marking number. These marking tacks were generally made in pairs. . . one would be tacked on to the storm window and the other matching number to the window's frame on the house. This would insure a proper fit when each window was put back on after summer.

I'd say a window number, in the old days they would put them on storm windows so they would go back to the right window. there would be a # tack for window sill, storm, and screen, they didn't always interchange.I know the ones I posted look a little different, they are reproductions, I have the real ones on my house, built in 1895.
