Hello everyone I found this a few months ago near some cellar holes in newburgh ny. Most the stuff I find there date from 1870s to the early 1900s. The token reads A S GALE GOOD FOR 5 CENTS AT THE BAR on the reverse Mc NAMARS BROS 64 Fulton st NY. I havent been able to find this token online. If anyone could ID it it will be much appreciated.

Can you take some closeups?

Looks like a Bar token just looking close up at the one on the left.Congrats

Nice! Is the bar still open?

John--

Your token is from Abel S. Gale who shows up in the 1884-87 Newburgh. NY City Directories as having a saloon, restaurant, billiard and pool hall at 90 Broadway. Later, in 1889, he had a livery stable at 132 Liberty. He went on to have various other businesses in Newburgh after that. He died in 1909.

It would be great if you could do some other photos and let me post the token on tokencatalog.com for a more permanent record. Close-ups with side-lighting that would show the wording better.

Thanks!

I will try to get some better shots I used my friends phone for those pics. I usualy use my tablet and the cameras not that great on it. Just give me a day or two.

Thanks! I see that the museum in Newburgh is next door to 90 Broadway. I can't tell for sure, but the 90 Broadway building may be old enough to habe been Gale's bar. He is shown in 1905 as a hotel proprietor, but I don't see an address. Maybe the hotel was upstairs?

so when i posted this i also sent some pictures to Mark Parker. I got a reply back and he is going to run it in Western and Eastern Treasures in a few months. I am very excited to have one of my finds shown in a magazine.
