Can anyone identify this stone?

It was given to me from a friend years ago. He states it came from a dump area near a sort of mill/factory or foundry. I am not sure. Anyone who has any info or idea on this item It would be appreciated.

Referred to as "slag", a byproduct produced from the foundry. Very common around sites such as those that you mention.

good answer diggin, when I was a younger man I worked in steel mills and iron foundries in NY....each afternoon after the pour we would let the slag out of the furnace and do cleanup the next morning....I broke and shoveled a lot of that same material away
