Hello all,

Does anyone know what this might be if anything? A large drill maybe? Thanks in advance.

Looks a little big for a drill. Looks like it has been modified for use on one edge for sure.

I have found some mighty large gravers that were likely used for scoring large animal bones. That may be the reason for the point. Does it look like it was put there intentionally?

The point and overall shape definitely look intentional to me, although I am a noob. Sorry for the bad pictures, I have to work on my photography skills. I'll see if I can take some better ones.

I doubt these are going to help much, but here it goes.

It has kind of a flat bottom if that means anything. The closest thing I can find in my New England artifact handbook is a reamer, but like you said, it seems too big to be that.

Kinda just looks likes like a rock. Lookin closer, looks like maybe a little work was done on it. In the third pic in your first post I would say a knife.

The earth was the creator of that mystery... looks like a rock. Since quartz is crystal the flat side most likely missing it's other half. Not sure man had anything to do with that. Cool though

It looks to me as though flakes were removed from the area where it narrows close to the tip. Lots of artifacts have come from this field, so I'll need a little more convincing that it's completely natural. The items pictured below were found the same day in the same place. If everyone is in agreement that it's natural, then I'll take the threads word for it.

Well quartz is a hard one to see the work on through a persons comp. If you have never found that type of quartz before as in artifacts most would call rocks on them. I have found that kind before. The wavy flaking on the one side tells the story. Nice hand held scraper. Its a keeper
The flat spot on the end is called the "striking platform" it is where it was taken from the mother stone.

Using that handbook, reamer(aka pipe bowl reamer) is a reasonable match, but you might never know. You'd expect it to show usage at the tip. Here's a probable reamer, stem is snapped; it was most likely a Meadowood...

Awsome, thanks again guys, much appreciated. Nice artifact Charl.

its definatly not just a rock ...its clearly been worked.....its definatly not a drill too wide ....i agree that its some sort of crude knife or cutting tool...or they were in the process of finishing it

Thanks beadman, very cool.

your welcome metal anytime i can help

For what it's worth, my first thought was hand held reamer.

That's why I posted my example. It looks like it could have at least started a reaming activity, maybe need a narrower one to finish, but that's why I said if using Hoffman's New England guide, reamer was the closest fit. But, another one of those "need to hold it" things.......
