went to a new spot metal detecting sunday

the property owner says that eleanor roosevelt use to ride her horse on the property

then i found this sliver art deco brooch

note the great seal at the bottom

this could really be a gift giving to one of the best first lady's this country has ever had
i am waiting for some more information from The Historian of the U.S. Department of State.

Hmmm...she was in upstate New York in May 1933...so could very well be while she was there on vacation that she dropped it...see link below...

This is a very cool find. I hope you can link it back to the First Lady, but the aforementioned trip to Upstate New York occurred 7 years prior to the Roosevelt's getting their dog Fala.

After giving it some more thought, I wonder if this was a gift that was given out by the President or First Lady. It has the Presidential Seal on it. Would someone bestowing a gift to the First Lady put the Seal on it? Maybe but I have to wonder.

it is not the presidential seal it is the Great seal
from what i have found so far is that they would attach the great seal to items that were gifted to the President or the first lady

Update i received a reply from the Franklin D Roosevelt National Historic site:

"The image is intriguing. You may wish to follow up with the FDR Presidential Library as they have an extensive image collection. You might wish to start at their web page where many images of Eleanor are digitized and available."

Looks like a sweethearts brooch. Loads of these made during both WW's & they come in all types. It was meaningful to the lady the soldier gave it too. They probably had that type of dog. (They always had some kind of regimental insignia, as it showed support to the cause & the regiment)

Small world and A really cool find.As a kid I use to ride horses with Sally Roosevelt (FDRs Granddaughter) .Here is a pix. of her.

Technically, it is the Coat Of Arms of United States, which is the obverse of the Great Seal.

I would be surprised if there's no hallmark on the back, since it is most likely a custom made piece.

You're correct. It isn't the Presidential Seal. Where did you find the information regarding attaching the Great Seal to things gifted to the President(s)?
