I have studied the Beale story and ciphers in detail not to necessarily solve them but whether they can be solved at all.
The answer to this question lies in the alphabetical strings that appear when you apply the KEY from Cipher 2 (DOI) to the cipher numbers of Cipher 1.
Most experts believe the 22 consecutive numbers creating an alphabetical string located at 188 of the 520 cipher numbers means it is a hoax because they had to intentionally added using random numbers cipher numbers.
I initially agreed which is why i stopped researching. However, after i joined this forum and saw so many claims to have solved it, i reopened my research to see it it is actually possible to solve with cryptography.
I based my analysis on two rules:
1. I took the story at face value.
2. The KEY from St Louis had to be in the format of a book cipher (i.e., same format as DOI) to make the decoding as easy as possible for Robert Morriss to distribute the treasure to the heirs.
These rules changed how i looked at the 22 character string; instead of a hoax, i saw them as added protection to the book cipher by redacting those 22 letters/words in the message even if you found the correct document.
IOW, these random cipher numbers at location 188 protected the Cipher 1 treasure location while still maintaining the book cipher format to make Robert Morriss's job easier.
Of course i found no one in the forum who agreed.
