This is a pix of a area in southern Cal.. Can anyone explain the why the array of colors. I figured if anyone who now I thought you rock hounds would be the guys.

Long story short, there are three basic components of every land mass. Sand, Silt and Clay. A mixture of these along with varied oxidation on present elements will create the difference in colors you see.
