This was found at an 1860's era campsite along with round balls, mini balls, eagle buttons, black powder box caps, saddle shield, etc. It is made of brass and is 3 1/4 in. long. Any ideas?

It's an entry thimble, the ramrod pipe where the ramrod enters the stock. Probably off of a full stock muzzle loading rifle or pistol.

This is a photo of a thimble inlet into the stock of a rifle. For lots of pictures do a google search of images, "ramrod thimbles."
