My friend and I went out MD'ing where we know a blacksmith used to have his shop back in the 1850-60's. It was a big hassle because we kept finding little pieces of scrap metal everywhere. I figured it might be "hot slag" as I called it from his forge. However, I did find this about 8 inches or so down. Looks like a weight of some sort. Our best GUESS so far is a type of fishing weight with a little fin to keep it from twisting as it gets pulled along the bottom??? Also in this yard I found a 1920 s Wheat penny!!!!! So, can anyone tell me what this weight could have been used for? You can see it's cracked up near the hole!! What on earth could have caused that.. surely if it cracked when he made it he would have re-used the lead. Here's the pic.

That is most definitely the blacksmiths rendition of a sea turtle that was
hit by a shark, and only has one leg left. ;D ;D ;D

Something this basic should have done been ID'ed, where's all the great researchers (PBK, tinpan, Montana Jim, romeo-1, etc.). It seems like some people get ID'ed here and some don't. I guess if you're in the click you get ID'ed. Anyway its a Roman bronze phallic amulet for men's fertility. See for your self.

Especially as your first post! First impressions go a long way bub. I am amazed every day at the talents of many of the members of this group, not only to find the good stuff, but to be able to identify the obscure, WITHOUT bias or discrimination.

dont think it is a bronze phallic amulet.
The pictures look nothing alike.
i thought it might be an old plumb bob,but i cant figure out what the little tip would be for.
I also agree with rockfshr.

If it helps at all, I can let you know weighs a lot heavier then it looks, it's about the weight of a full can of pepsi.. give or take. I got a good laugh at the phallic comment, but I don't think that is what it is either. Makes me wonder what you were searching for on ebay to even come across that! Either way, thanks for everyone's help in checking this hunk of metal out. Either way it's my treasure for ever and ever and I'll always remember my first great day with my Garret 250. This weekend I'm hitting the county fairgrounds near my house that has been in use for over 120 years. Wish me luck.

Check the wooded areas if there are any, spots where there has been less use over the years. A challenge you will run into is I imagine there will be a fair amount of trash down to about 2 inches. It sounds like a great spot though, good luck!

The closest I can find is that it is similiar to downrigger weights for fishing but the line attachments needed are not there. Heres one from eBay.

oops forgot the eBay picture Here.
