Canadian General Service WWI Hat Badge!

Got back for two hours this morning to a couple of fields I started hunting last year. I’ve been waiting for the soybeans to be harvested and last Wednesday they were. These fields have produced some interesting finds for me. The hunt started out slowly and it wasn’t until I moved over to the east field that I finally made my first find… a WWI Canadian Hat Badge! My next find was a heavy brass cast horse bell. It was cold and windy this morning, temperature was 40F and the ground was frozen where the sun hadn’t touched it yet.

The farmer came by an hour after I started detecting to turn the fields, so when he stopped we had a nice 15min chat. He was kind enough to give me some of the history of this c1860 15-acre farm. He will be planting winter wheat next week, so I’ll likely head back there on Monday before he replants.

Great find. I found one awhile back and when I first pulled it out I thought it was trash. It's in pretty good shape but I'm to scared to try to straighten it out. It came out of the ground that way. It's a older picture when I just rinsed the dirt off!

Yeah, trying to straighten old thin brass never works out, I usually end up in tears when I snap it!

This piece could very likely have seen WWI action in Europe... makes me wish "if only it could talk"!
It looks like it's been in the ground for a long time, likely lost by the original owner?
