This site is located along what used to the original stagecoach road in the area. The road was straightened and by-passed this area sometime in the 1930s - 40s when a large factory was built across the road. Originally, there were at least 3 — 4 houses located here dating from the 1800s. The last of these homes was located in the area circled in red and was torn down 5 years ago. The property is very trashy, so detecting here was a challenge to say the least. Thankfully I managed to find an 1890 Canadian LC and an early Conestoga wagon bell. A revisit is definitely in order in the fall when the weather cools off.

Thanks very much for looking,
Dave

Nice finds Dave. Canadians LCs seem to hold up a lot better than US LCs.

Great finds and nice cleaning. I'm weak on the followup cleanings.

Very Nice!!! Congrats!!!

Some very nice recoveries!

As a kid we used to find the dumps from /near old coach trails.
Often in a dry gully or ravine where people and horses did not walk.
A downhill business ,where a wagon bed could be cleared off from above the low spot and gravity did the rest.
Not all were like that; but the repeated ones seemed to be.

That soil sure was kind to your finds. Nice job with the preservation too. No matter how hard I try or what advice I take, my finds never look like that. Congrats!

Did you tumble the bell and LC? They look great! Gary

Great finds. Congrats.

Thanks very much Doug... welcome to Tnet from Toronto!

Thanks Steve, The pre-1910 Canadian LC's do seem to stand up better, I'm not sure why though? :icon_scratch:
I've only ever found one US LC, but I do find a lot of Wheaties & the occasional I.H.

Hope you're having a good year so far,
Dave

Thanks for your post Gene.
I've learned about cleaning my finds mainly through trial & error... but mainly error. :laughing7:

Great info on finding old dump sites along early roads!

Thank you Len,
As you well know, no matter how good our restoration techniques are, if the soil does too much damage to the metal, nothing can be fully restored. :dontknow:
This site is located beside a fresh water river/lake system, even though the ground is full of limestone rocks, the soil seems to be fairly clean.

Best of luck to you!
Dave

Good morning Gary!
No sir, I use a fine wire wheel on my bench-mounted polisher, I then sealed the metals with Conservator's Wax and hit it with a buffing wheel.

I actually don't think the pics do the LC justice, it's in an amazing state of preservation.
I'll try and post a better pic of it at the bottom of this thread.

Very nice !

Thank you Sir! :icon_salut:

Thanks for your post my friend... hope you're having a good year finding more sash buckles!

Considering on how dry and hot it has been you really walked away with a couple of nice keepers. Congrats!

Having been out in the heat the day before I just don't have anything left in the detecting tank for energy to meet up.

That's a great sight when those LC's come out of the ground in such a stunning condition. Really like that bell, well preserved as well. Congrats!

We've always got the fall buddy, hopefully this whole COVID thing will be under control by then. ::)
I'm just waiting for the weather to cool down a bit before I make the 2hr drive back to the site.

Thank you for your post Anton, it's been a while my friend!
Yes, the soil here has a lot of broken limestone fragments mixed into it, I'm thinking that encouraged drainage and help preserve the relics.

Hope life's returning to normal in Quebec, as it is here in Ontario.
