cancel a return (from the buyer)

I had a bad experience with a seller I've dealt with a lot in the past. He wouldn't respond to my PM, so I finally opened a case. Well, that got a response. Turns out he was away and someone else was manning his account for them. He has no idea why this person didn't respond to me that the real seller will get back to me shortly.
I do still want to return the item, cuz it's INAD. We spoke about it, and things are good between us. Can I cancel the return and still mail the package back on his return label? I don't want him to get a strike against him because of me.
