Found it in an area where civil war relics also were at, also an 1837 large cent found in same area

I think it is supposed to be a coin of Queen Elizabeth I of England but it looks to me to be a replica. It could still be quite old.

What's the size? This is listed as a "half groat" - about 20mm.

Really neat find!

Ha, well done bramblefinds. I had just managed to get as far as POSUI DEUM ADIUTOREM MEUM which I guess it says? Now to tell my wife she can stop photoshopping the obverse for me:unhappysmiley:

VERY interesting find--- legend and general design indicates it's supposed to be a copy of an Elizabeth I coin, but the bust looks more like Charles I! It appears to be lead (very common for tokens in old England to be made of lead). I also agree it appears to have some major age to it.... and also very hard to tell if it was struck to serve as a counterfeit coin or as some kind of (maybe) British medal, token, jeton, etc.? As to what century it was struck-- looks like it could have been struck as far back as the 1600s, maybe as recent as the 1800s. And what the heck was it doing at a US civil war site?? I do have a base metal "6 pence" of Elizabeth I, but it appears to be a hammered piece, not nicely round like this piece.

Thanks for the help guys. I agree that it appears to be Elizabeth the first, what stumped me is that all similar coins to it I found online were silver. Yes it says MEVM POSVI the rest is too hard to call by looking at the coin itself. One could assume the rest is the same as the hammered silvers. It does appear to be lead too I believe, or pewter maybe, definitely not copper. It was found in mechanicsville va at an old homesite near a battlefield. No idea what it was doing there! Sorry for the delayed response I fell asleep.

It must be very rare but is it valuable? Not that I would ever sell it just curious :)

No, these pewter/lead-mix copies are 20th C, & given out at fairs etc... (not worth more than $1)
16th C examples were copper core counterfiets.
