I don't know if the really old canteens had screw on lids or just a cork. Maybe someone else can help you with it. Monty

1800's canteens had cork tops, but I haven't seen one this size.

Smudge pots are used primarily in the citrus belts such as Florida or SoCal...

Its probably an aboration if found in Kentucky...

So if you hear hoof beats, always think horses first, and not Zebra's...

This is most likely a Zebra...

Probably ain't a canteen if it's only four inches long. But I have no clue what it is.

Here is one I found that is about the same size,

SPIRIT CANTEEN USED BY GENERAL HOKE.

Canteen is approximately four inches in diameter. This canteen resembles powder cans of the Mexican War and may have been previously used as such.

The Confederate Army went to war with every type of canteen imaginable. On this page I will endeavor to show a few canteens used by the Southern Army. If you want to learn more about Civil War Canteens see Stephen Sylvia and Mike O'Donnells book "Civil War Canteens" available from Moss Publications, PO Box 729, Orange County, Va. 22960.

I remember smudge pots used in the 50's/60's in Salisbury, N.C. when I was a kid. Used them to mark road construction and holes at night. Actually lifted a few and took them home to play with (boys and fire-you know how that is!!)
